Faxitron

Contribution to the purchase of a Faxitron

Cost: £45,000

Ward/Department: Breast Care Unit

Description: The Faxitron machine is a radiological system that allows surgeons to perform a mammogram on breast specimens inside the operating theatre. The results are instantaneous and can provide an X-ray of the specimen in less than 60 seconds, demonstrating whether the edges of the specimen are visibly clear of cancer. Surgeons can view the whole specimen that has been removed without having to leave the patients’ side. The Machine also decreases the need for a patient to return for further surgery because it enables surgeons to remove additional tissue without any delay to the patient, if required. It reduces the length of time for Surgical operating procedures and the length of time that a patient is under anaesthetic.

The League bought it jointly with their colleague Pippa Ward (the League contributed £45,000).
